Lycanthropy, 2014

Crossing the mental line between humans and animals has often been mystified and is linked with shamanism. In medical science, feelings of transformation from human into animal is called Lycanthropy. Also, the gift of being able to communicate with animals has been regarded as a special talent.

In my photos I study people who are trying to cross the border and meet their inner animal. In the studio situation, I asked my models to perform as animals. All my models could find the state of mind where they started to study the animal side of themselves, without me asking them to do anything specific. These pictures show the moment when the models found their animalself.

Me/ Näkki

Directed, shot and edited by Niina Kiiveri
Actress: Heta Lähdesmäki
Music by Mari Sainio (http://www.marisainio.com/)

Näkki (also known as Neck) is a water spirit from Finnish folklore. Usually regarded as a man figure he lures people under water by disguising as a woman and playing irresistible music with his golden violin. He lives in lakes and rapids. He is deadly but tempting. A symbol of vice.

My water spirit wears glittering fish skin and smooth, silk like sea weed on the red carpet.

Me/ a Myth is a video project that studies the world of old myths in our time. What form does, for example, an ancient water spirit take when brought to the contemporary world? International artists take on the challenge and turn old local and global myths into video performance characters. This project shows that these mythological characters are still strong with us and not just a part of our forgotten past.
